We really need answers on this from the EC
Back in May of this year, Mike Stein confirmed that Pat Spillars was signing Fleet’s checks - a constitutionally-mandated responsibility of the Chief Financial Officer. He also said, last May, that he would start signing them himself.
So, we know that Pat Spillars is able to sign Fleet’s checkbook.
It is my understanding - and I really hope I’m wrong here - that Pat is also the one who does the financial reports. If so, it makes sense that she would get the bank statements.
This week, we hear rumors that Pat Spillars actually has an ink stamp with Mike Stein’s signature on it to sign checks. This was approved by the EC in June.
Regardless of the ramifications of the EC purposely side-stepping the constitution by allowing Pat to use an ink stamp, this is a huge problem. If - and that’s what needs to be confirmed or proved incorrect - Pat does sign checks, does have an ink stamp of Mike Stein’s signature and is the one getting the bank statements, we have a very serious breach of financial accountability here.
I am not for one minute saying that Pat is stealing anything. What I am saying is that all the checks and balances that have been put in place to prevent what happened in 1995-96 are being willfully punted aside by an administration that is already known for outrageous spending.
We have fought for 10 years to protect this organization from just this sort of tactic. If this EC is allowing all of this to happen, it needs to stop now.
