SFI-L: Back up and open for.. what reason again?
This morning saw the long postponed re-opening of SFI-L finally take place. Some months after the list was closed after it’s train wreck of an opening, the administration has finally found time to get things together and bring the list back up.
The question remains whether or not they’ve found a true purpose for the list. For all intents, SFI-L is nothing more than an echo of STARFLEET-L, the ‘unofficial’ list that has served the membership well for over a decade.
The timing is also rather suspect, after Sal came to STARFLEET-L on Wednesday, asking for help in bettering STARFLEET for the good of the membership and pledging to work on communicating with the membership moreso than he has in the first nine months of his administration.
If he wants to communicate more with the membership, fine, the avenue is already there. There is no need for another, duplicate list when people can (and have for the past decade or more) received their information from STARFLEET-L.
This is our grapevine. It’s been tried and tested and worked well for the organization for the time is has been in existence. Why create another list? What purpose does it serve? I’d be interested in seeing the administration justify its existence.

As far as I know, the only “official” justification is that the lawyer told Sal that unless they had a listserve that he could control, that they were potentially open to lawsuit if someone on his EC made a comment that could be construed as libel. That being said, I too think its a poor idea seeing as the exact same thing can happen on a fleet controlled list unless every single post is being moderated, in which case you have effectively imposed censorship over any communications in and around STARFLEET.
Much of this was the reason the Unofficial List was the “go-to” place during McGinnis since he basically outlawed electronic medium as a official means of communication, primarily because he could not control it.
Of course, I could be wrong…

There was some discussion on the list about renaming it to make filtering easier.
I recommend FLEET-ON, for Fleet Official Network.

Would it matter which list the comment was made on? Libel is libel..

What Sal claimed the lawyer had said was that if the EC used starfleet-l in an official manner, than Starfleet would be liable if someone’s feeling got hurt on starfleet-l and wanted to sue. Since the starfleet-l would not punish people who called out liars, thieves and idiots, or at least wouldn’t punish them to Sal’s satisfaction. Further, after seeing a copy of the email the lawyer sent cut and pasted to my then RC (and the rest of the AB), the lawyer said just the opposite, specifically that the EC would only be liable if they insisted on controlling the media.
This is all Sal and his buddies wanting to hurt people they don’t like, people who have worked harder, have provided more and better service to the membership, and refuse to kowtow and worship Mandi, Sal, Pat, and he rest. They lied to the electorate, and got in, then found out the rules we put in to stop another McGinnis stopped them too. Now they find they have a job to do for 36 months that they truly are too inept to do, which is why they are so angry all the time.
Its sad
