Evidence of Failure, Part II
From CQ 147 –
“Communications in any relationship is very important, and there is a relationship between STARFLEET’s leadership and its members. So I see the SFI-L as a great source of input, discussion and understanding between STARFLEET and its members.”
That’s Sal Lizard in the most recent Communique, talking about STARFLEET’s official mailing list. It has been closed for over two months by the EC.

I agree, Emmett. So far, Sal is hit/miss when it comes to communication. However, I’ve got a funny for you. A few weeks ago, we were challenged to write Sal a letter explaining what we percieved the problems to be. I wrote him a short letter, explaining to him that his failure of communication was sending the wrong message to the membership.
Here is what I sent.
Sal,
I’ve noticed a trend in the last six months,
that has me somewhat concerned. For a lack of a better
word, I call it “Lack of Communication.”
I’ve always thought, that as the president of the
STARFLEET International, the person in charge should be
busy, and yet still communicate with the membership as a
whole.
It somewhat bothers me that I haven’t heard a
single thing from you, or the other EC, on the two lists
that we use to communicate, either the Unofficial list, or
the Official list. At the very least, your chief of
Staff, should be plugging your name into the list, so that
people know that you are still alive.
As a concerned member, far from my home chapter, the
only news I get from Fleet, is on the lists. I would love
to hear what happened at IC, and what you are doing to make
Star Fleet better than it has been.
I understand how busy your life is, and how hard it
can be to answer every email, but I’d be satisfied with
a once-a-month letter from you, or from your chief of staff,
telling us how Fleet is doing, and what the next month can
bring.
Here is his response, less than 10 hours later. I was a bit suprised that he wrote back that fast….
“Thanks for your email, Joe. You are right about communications and I have been providing reports to the AB and to the CQ. I have had every desire to be more communicative but am still working on that area of weakness.
Bear with me as I continue to work at communicating better.
Sal”
If he does get better, then maybe, just maybe, we won’t scream at him so much.

It’s not really within the purview of this set of articles to assign blame or champion good work — It is to document relevant issues fairly and honestly.
