CQ 147 Roundup

No Gravatar

The new CQ 147 is available for download from the STARFLEET Member Database. I have not read it cover to cover, but I want to hit the high and low points and open the floor to discussions.

  • How many times does Sal need to say “double edged sword?”
  • Black background bad! Not only does it cause retinal bleeding when trying to read it on the screen, it is impossible to print.
  • Are you kidding me that they are taking the “survey” as gospel? Only 228 people returned ballots. That is far less than 10% of the membership. And with the confusion over the damned thing, when it was closed, etc, the survey should have been rendered null and void.
  • Garrick is a putz. Seriously.
  • Private Prigal needs to be ejected from the nearest airlock. Not. Funny. Come on, now.
  • Why are the financial reports from the CFO Pat Spill… er.. I mean Mike Stein dated March 2008? These are the EXACT SAME FIGURES that have been up on SFI.ORG for months! I do believe that the CFO is constitutionally mandated to provide the members with timely information.
  • Pointed out on FleetChat: This is a Star Trek fan club, yes? Why no mention of Star Trek or the upcoming movie anywhere, with the exception of “Gene’s Dream?”
  • Why so many articles from Region 5 and the USS Thermopylae? I know Alex Rosenweig has several articles he has sent in. As a matter of fact, I have it on good authority that he resubmitted them in time for this issue.

Please feel free to post, either comments or new articles, about this shrink wrapped stool sample we call The Communique.

I remember when the CQ was something that I was proud to show off to my friends and potential new members.

Seems as if those days are gone.

I like how Sal seems to think our governing documents contain vulgarities.

    Editing FAIL.

  4. Scott A. AkersNo Gravatar Says:

    Matt,

It wasn’t an editing failure. Sal actually believes that a governing document that DOES COMPLY with the law, ask Chuck Freas a real lawyer who vetted the COnsitution, a governing document that protects the members from Dictatorial Actions like Sal’s and Dan’s, a governing document that recognizes the same fundamental rights that the US Consitution and STAR TREK promotes, such governing documents must be Vulgar, because they do not let him treat the members with disdain and like serfs. Sal has waited since 1997 to have the ability to fuck people over, and now he has the opportunity, he is frustrated that the rules we the members set up to protect us from somebody like him, are working.

It still boggles my mind, that calling someone a Bitch, a Bitty, a Liar or even “fucking retard” is considered worse behavior than being a Bitch, a Bitty, a Liar and even a Fucking Retard.

The Emperor has no clothes, doesn’t care if anybody knows, and will punish severely anyone who mentions it.

Sal doesn’t care about the members, never has, never will, and will continue to lie to all of us members until we quit, or his term is finished. IF he allows his term to finish.

Dan McGinnis is back Ladies and Gentlemen and his name is now Sal.

I remember when I used to enjoy writing for CQ. I enjoyed having a co-byline with my brother on an Explorers Club article and, while it was no pleasure to write, it was cathartic to write that eulogy for my hometown of New York City after 9/11.

With all of the new Trek comics and novels out there, I’m surprised that no one is interested in writing reviews of these.

To borrow a quote from Ed Tunis, “This organization has become more about being a fan of Starfleet, than about being a fan of Star Trek.”

I just reread my previous post and realized that the CQ articles that gave me the most satisfaction only had a tangential relationship to Trek and Starfleet: The Explorers Club dinner was only notable for Neil Armstrong’s presence; the 9/11 quoted open sources on how different NY/NJ area chapters of Starfleet had been affected and quoted Trek actors such as Siddig el Fadil/Alexander Siddig and George Takei, but at least one or two people back then told me that my viewpoints weren’t appropriate for a Trek-oriented publication.

So those were FAIL on my part, I guess.

I enjoyed being the “Interview Guy” for a few years, interviewing two incoming administrations and other notables around the fleet. I enjoyed being the Graphics Editor for a year and I enjoyed reading Alex’s articles on starship design and I enjoyed reading up on what the other chapters were doing in terms of activities. It was where I got ideas to make my own chapter better.

Working on the CQ was fun… just like my 13 years in ShOC was fun… but when an admin that was not friendly to me took over, I was tossed out of those jobs on my green clay ass.

No wonder fewer and fewer seem to want to contribute lately.

I look at it as an opportunity. These guys really don’t have any idea what they’re doing. I can look at what they produce, determine the weak spots and fill it with my own chapter’s newsletter. I laid out a section of it today, listing the newest Trek novels released from Simon and Schuster. Big-ass picture of Major Kira on page 4 or something, mainly because we’re a ‘Star Trek’ fan club, not a STARFLEET fan club.

Any chapter that sits idly by and waits for STARFLEET to turn itself around under its own power is simply doomed. For all their talk of wanting to work together to build things, the folks in charge seem much more interested in being in charge than actually helping chapters.

Things are just fine on the Blackheart, though I do have to admit that I’ve had to build some infrastructure for folks that want to be on the ship, but want nothing at all to do with STARFLEET. If the parent organization were managed more consistently, I wouldn’t have to build that kind of thing at all; It shouldn’t be necessary.

STARFLEET shouldn’t be the root cause of the Accord losing their CO. It shouldn’t be the root cause of Blackheart losing its XO. It should be a force for positive change, not an inspirational song of exodus. I think that all things considered, I’d prefer a silent EC doing very little than a loud EC doing wrong.

It’s very similar on the Stormbringer. We have our Battlestar Aspect which is going gangbusters with well over 200 people on board so that has become damn near a full time job for me. A lot of events that the Stormbringer does are cross genre… meaning that we do Star Wars/Star Trek/Galactica/Dr. Who/Stargate/Starship Tropers/etc all at the same events. It’s like the ultimate scifi salad bad; take what you want and leave the rest.

For example, this weekend… We’ve got our annual summer bash coming up in 2 days, the Admiral’s 41st brithday to plan on the 27th, my chapter’s 10th anniversary in October to plan, my wife to murder and Gilder to blame for it (oh wait, strike that last)…

We are still interested in Star Trek and STARFLEET but to be honest, due to the idiocy going on at the upper levels, STARFLEET has taken a backseat for us. We expect that we will delve back into the realm of Star Trek about the time we start making preparations and costumes for the new Trek movie due out next spring.

We do plan to promote the Stormbringer heavily in our theaters… we also plan to promote STARFLEET because we do believe that the issues with this administration are temporary.

I’m so damned tired of the “Gene’s Dream” cultie bullshit.

“Gene’s Dream” was to prosper as a result of his TV show and spinoff merchandise - period.

  12. Tony LopesNo Gravatar Says:

    Bravo Tony! My thoughts exactly.

I once got a scathing e-mail from our pal Billy Boy when I pointed out that “Gene’s Dream” was to meet starlets, make money, and get good ratings. That tool used to use “Gene’s Dream” like a club to beat people with.

Any use of “Gene’s Dream” as a motif for anything other than avarice is bullshit.

  13. Emmett PlantNo Gravatar Says:

    Gumby –

The Battlestar stuff makes all the sense in the world to me, as CDF membership costs nothing. I think there’s a few folks on Blackheart wondering why they should pay money to STARFLEET for garbage when Blackheart gives them things they like for free. Stormbringer is clearly giving folks things they like for free, as well.

I’ve joked often about ‘USS Blackheart - The International Star Trek Fan Association,’ but it’s ringing more and more true every day.

I also enjoyed your interviews Gumby and missed them!

If the editors want content, then they gotta specifically ask for material.

It’s not hard, it just takes effort.

  15. TimNo Gravatar Says:

I will say that editing and producing a bimonthly publication is hard work, probably moreso when you’re doing it as a volunteer. Kudos to those who have done that — and done it well.
