An Open Question to the Executive Committee

Why won’t you communicate with us and keep us up to date on things happening in STARFLEET?

I only ask this because, more and more, I’m finding out that people are not getting responses from EC members, things have happened that you haven’t announced and changes have been made but updates haven’t. To name a few…

Our Chief of Operations has resigned. This has not been announced officially.

The RC of Region 6 has resigned. This has not been announced officially.

I’ve sent three emails to the Chief of Computer Operations in the last 6 weeks and he has yet to respond. I know he’s getting them, I’m getting his autoresponder stating that I’ll get a reply within 72 hours.

Jon Lane was announced as the new Chief of Communications on August 11th. Almost 6 weeks later, the web site still says Peter Christian is the CoC.

Since Jon has become CoC, we have not seen a single communication from him. We don’t know what he’s doing, what his plans are or who his staff is.

According to an AB member, the whole insane idea of combining the EC and AB into one large body has been tossed out. Yet, on the Reformation site, the current draft of the Constitution still shows that.

Earlier this year, the AB voted to publicly announce all votes of the AB (AB08-04). To date, not even the vote to approve publicly announcing the votes has been publicly announced. The Vice Commander, STARFLEET
(as the Archivist of the AB) and the Commander, STARFLEET (as the Chairman of the AB) should be making sure this is followed.

We’ve spent almost $10,000 in attorney fees so far this year. To date, I’ve seen nothing that explains what we’ve gotten so far for ten grand.

These are just a few observations from my point of view. I’m sure other members could add more.

So, EC members, why won’t you communicate with us? Why haven’t you told us about EC and AB members that resign? Why won’t you respond to your emails? Why isn’t the website getting updated? Why hasn’t our new Chief of Communications communicated with us? Why isn’t the Reform site updated? Why aren’t you announcing the AB votes? Why won’t you tell us specifically what the attorney is doing for us? Why are you ignoring us?

You told us during the campaign that Members Matter.

If we really matter, if you really honestly and truly care about this organization and the people in it - WHY WON’T YOU TALK TO US?

Mike, they are in power, they have control of our money, they have many at top positions within each Region who have drank of the Kool-Aid.

It’s no different than any kind of nativist vs. newcomer conflict. They feel that we owe them everything and that they owe us nothing. (Except for the fact that most of us were here first.)

Do you expect people to ever apologize for suckering people in? I don’t.

    Hey Mike,

We have seen at least 2-3 postings from Jon Lane over the last week on the R2 List that I’m aware of. Are you not seeing them in R12?

If not, I’d be happy to fwd them to you Mike, let me know :)

    Mike

Perhaps its time for some ‘trickle down’?

Starting with RCs - “RC, I am a member and this situation is not acceptable to me”

Then on to chapter CO’s- ‘CO, I am a member and this not an acceptable situation.’

Or vice versa. (be polite but insistent)

People in authority who have 1) backbone; and, 2) some leadership ability, will be saying-

‘EC members, I am (RC/CO) of (Region/Chapter), I represent X members of this organization and they are asking me when this communication situation is going to improve’

  4. Dave LoweNo Gravatar Says:

This would work if the majority of RCs were not simply living in the status quo and rubber stamping everything.

I like the CO thing… except no one listens to COs. That’s why ships are leaving en masse. Some with over a decade under their belt in STARFLEET. They just decided “fuck it” and not renew enough members to stay current.

One in Region 7 has a very decorated, colorful history. 23 of 27 members are not renewing their SFI dues, including the command team. Effective October 1, they are no longer a STARFLEET chapter and by January 1, STARFLEET will be down another two dozen souls.

    Current numbers:

    08/02/08
    TOTAL MEMBERS : 3477
    TOTAL CHAPTERS : 225

    09/21/08
    TOTAL MEMBERS : 3471
    TOTAL CHAPTERS : 219

Not much has changed, but the six “zombie” chapters were removed before Mike Urvand resigned. We’ll see how it goes as the year draws to a close. Gumby has been plotting this, and Matt Bailee made a nice graph, too.

Maybe Sal has done a Kim Jong Il and Garrick is really in charge!

I think that a lot of lies are going to be exposed in the coming weeks.

  7. Mike MalotteNo Gravatar Says:

Gumby, I think you could be right…

    First time for everything. :-)

    Stranger things have happened…

Well, it would seem we know now why we don’t hear from the EC except on the Announcements List…how bad is it that you have to essentially impose a gag order on the people that are supposed to be working WITH you…

It’s a rough life working on the Politburo.

    Da, Comrade…

    Slight Correction:

Jon has sent out communication, I’ve seen several myself. I’ve also had numerous email exchanges with him. He responds, does so fairly quickly, and doesn’t come off as evasive.

So far he has said that Kitson is handling article submissions for him.

He has said what the CQ focus is for at least one issue that is upcoming. Specifically the closing of Star Trek the Experience.

He then announced that Kitson was out due to a medical condition and requested re-submittion of articles.

Jon requested Relay Officers for each region to make sure announcements are filtering down.

And those are only the ones I can think of without looking back in my email. So where, exactly, is he failing to communicate?

Sorry Mike, but you kinda tripped over your own spewing on this one. And since Jon is trying to be open and let folks know what is going on, albeit not every day and not in painfully minute detail, information is coming down.

  13. RichNo Gravatar Says:

    Quick follow up:

The information cited above came from the announce list or information relayed by the Relay Officers - not information sent to me privately.

  14. GumbyNo Gravatar Says:

    Rich,

Before you fall all over yourself chastising Mike (too late), remember that Jon is new to Sal Qaeda and has not fully graduated from the brainwashing academy :-)

  15. RichNo Gravatar Says:

Well Gumby, while you may see it this way - I see something that was posted that is woefully inaccurate. Fact checks WIN.

Jon is new, we can hope that he will continue to communicate. There is a 50/50 chance this won’t continue as with anything else. I hope he doesn’t fall on the silent side but you know what they say about hope.

    Long and Short

Mike was wrong in what he said. If I’m evil for saying it, then so be it. But beating him down for something that just ain’t so, isn’t going to encourage him to continue.

Or am I wrong on that too?

  16. GumbyNo Gravatar Says:

    Quick follow up:

Jon doesn’t post the the starfleet-l list either. So it would appear that Urvand’s telling of Sal’s “order” to the EC to boycott the starfleet-l list does indeed hold some water.

For the record… I applaud Jon’s efforts to break the chain of the EC’s lack of communication with the membership. I just wonder how long it will be before he gets fired for doing the right thing. :-)

  17. GumbyNo Gravatar Says:

Yes, I’ll bet you stay up often at night because “someone on the internet said something that was wrong”. :-)

  18. Mike MalotteNo Gravatar Says:

Rich - no, I wasn’t wrong. When I sent my post out, Jon had exactly zero posts to the Announcements list and zero posts to starfleet-l.

In fact, I just checked the archives on the Announcements list - he has only posted there twice - both after I sent my post out.

I can find no posts on the starfleet-l archives.

Now, if you’re going to try and tell me I have to be subbed to every Region list in the hopes of catching one of his posts (or a forward of one of his posts by a Relay Officer) somewhere, you are sadly mistaken.

So, no, I didn’t “trip over my own spewing” nor was I “woefully inaccurate”. Please check *your* facts before assuming I’m just “beating [someone] down”.
